The Regional Centre of Excellence on Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse is officially inaugurated
On this 28th November 2016, Minister Nyirasafari Esperance joined the Prime Minister, Anastase Murekezi, to officially inaugurate the newly constructed Regional Centre of Excellence, a coordination facility for African security organs in responding to Gender Based Violence and child abuse.
The Centre located in the surrounding area of Rwanda National Police Headquarters comes as the accomplishment of one of the resolution of Kigali International Conference Declaration (KICD) member states, who unanimously agreed to establish the coordination office in Kigali.
It was built at a tune of over Rwf745 million courtesy of the World Bank support. The three-block facility includes a training, administration and conference blocks. It will act as a regional centre for research, data collection, documentation and training, among others.
While officially inaugurating the centre, the Prime Minister called it a “strong tool for cooperation between African countries in the fight against Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse.”
Thanking all those who contributed to the establishment of the centre, the Premier called for its effective utilisation for the realisation of the desired results: “The beautiful infrastructure is ready; we now need to maximise its use to ensure that we explore it to its full potential to boost Africa's security organs' collaborative effort in ending violence against women and girls.” Premier noted.
He called upon KICD member countries to avail their experts and “provide full support towards full operationalisation of the centre.”
The inauguration was also also attended by top government officials including Gen.James Kabarebe Minister of Defense and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana. The exercise was also witnessed by representatives from security organs across the continent, development partners and civil society, among others.
