Minister Uwimana calls on citizens to fight genocide ideology
On 18 April 2026, Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Hon. Consolée Uwimana, joined residents of Mwulire Sector in Rwamagana District for the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, held at Mwulire Genocide Memorial, where 27,184 victims are laid to rest.
Speaking at the event, Minister Uwimana said the commemoration serves to honour innocent lives lost during the Genocide against the Tutsi and to express solidarity with families whose loved ones are buried at the memorial, and encouraged survivors to remain resilient and to continue striving for a dignified future.
She emphasized that remembering the Genocide against the Tutsi is not confined to a single day or commemoration period, but remains a permanent national responsibility and a sacred duty. She said that it is essential for restoring dignity to victims, preserving the truth, and strengthening Rwanda’s commitment to building a nation founded on unity, peace, and mutual respect.
Recalling the painful history of Mwulire Hill, Minister Uwimana paid tribute to the Tutsi who had sought refuge there and resisted repeated attacks before being brutally killed by Interahamwe militias, supported by the Government, soldiers and police. She noted that the atrocities committed at Mwulire remain a painful reminder of the systematic planning and execution of the Genocide against the Tutsi by the genocidal regime.
The Minister commended survivors, particularly those from Mwulire, for their extraordinary resilience, courage, and determination to rebuild their lives while contributing to national reconciliation and recovery. She observed that their strength and spirit of forgiveness continue to inspire the nation.
Minister Uwimana also warned that genocide ideology, denial, and negationism persist in various forms, particularly through misinformation, hate speech, and manipulative content spread on social media. She urged citizens, especially young people, to learn Rwanda’s history, defend the truth, and reject all narratives that seek to distort facts or divide Rwandans.
She reaffirmed the Government of Rwanda’s commitment to combating genocide ideology in all its forms and called on citizens to uphold the values of Ndi Umunyarwanda and continue safeguarding national unity.
