Minister Uwimana Consolee urges the community to support girls’ dreams
Bugesera, Minister Uwimana Consolée has urged parents to listen to their children, guide them with love, support their education and encourage them to pursue their dreams, stressing the importance of nurturing values that help them become responsible citizens.
The Minister made the call during the celebration of the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child held under the theme “An Empowered Girl, a Better Future.”
She commended the progress girls have made in different fields, including agriculture, technology, business, sports, mining and technical professions traditionally dominated by men. She noted that when girls are given opportunities, they can achieve great things and contribute meaningfully to national development.
However, she highlighted persistent challenges facing girls, including sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy and social norms that limit their opportunities. She called on everyone to protect girls, support them and create an environment where they can develop their full potential.
Minister Uwimana encouraged girls to study hard, believe in themselves, set goals and work towards achieving them while resisting negative influences. She also urged boys to respect and support their sisters and protect them from harmful behaviours that could prevent them from fulfilling their ambitions.
The Minister further called on parents to teach children respect, self-respect, a strong work ethic, patriotism and positive Rwandan cultural values. She emphasised that protecting, educating and empowering girls is a shared responsibility essential to building a brighter future for all.
The International Day of the Girl Child is observed annually on 11 October to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face worldwide. Established by the United Nations in 2011, the day promotes girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. It also calls for greater action to address barriers to girls’ education, safety and equal opportunities.
