Rwanda's International Women's Day Celebration: Honoring 30 Years of Empowerment and Progress

On March 8, 2024, Rwanda marked a significant milestone in its pursuit of gender equality and women's empowerment with the celebration of International Women's Day. Approximately 7000 individuals, comprising women, girls, and male advocates, gathered to commemorate the pivotal role that women have played in Rwanda's transformation over the past three decades.

Under the theme "30 years: Women in the country’s development," the event aimed to highlight the achievements in empowering women and girls while strategizing for their enhanced participation in political, economic, and social spheres. Held at the BK Arena in Kigali, the event saw the participation of esteemed figures, including the President of the Republic, Paul Kagame.

In his address, President Kagame underscored the significance of gender equality as a driving force for societal progress. He acknowledged Rwanda's advancements in empowering women, attributing these to inclusive policies, legal reforms, and political commitment. He called for collective efforts to address gender-based disparities and ensure equal opportunities for women and girls.

“Women stand as a cornerstone in our country's advancement, their value not obscured but evident. It is not hidden; it has always been visible. Gender equality is not a revelation; it is a recognition of their inherent worth. I encourage women to assert their rights while reminding every Rwandan to fiercely advocate for their own." President Kagame

He emphasized the need for Rwandans to advocate for their rights and recognized women's vital role in fostering peace, stability, and prosperity.

The celebration served as a reminder of the ongoing global imperative to promote gender equality and women's empowerment. It highlighted the necessity for collaborative endeavors to overcome barriers and create a fairer and more equitable society where everyone can thrive.

As Rwanda commemorates 30 years of women's contributions to its development, the International Women's Day celebration stands as a testament to the progress achieved and the collective resolve to forge a more inclusive and prosperous future for all.
