Rwanda marks women’s month with a sports campaign

March 2025 – Rwanda proudly joined the global community in commemorating the 50th anniversary of International Women’s Day (IWD) under the national theme “Empowered Women, Stronger Nation” and “Umugore ni uw’agaciro.” In Kinyarwanda. This year’s celebration was marked by a month-long awareness campaign aimed at promoting women's participation in sports as a pathway to empowerment, health, and socio-economic advancement.

The campaign was coorganised by the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion , the National Women's Council and the Ministry of Sports, spotlighting three major sports disciplines such as volleyball, basketball, and football with dedicated events held throughout March

This initiative officially kicked off on March 14, 2025, with a volleyball match between Kepler Women’s Volleyball Club and Police Women’s Volleyball Club, graced by the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Hon. Uwimana Consolee. In her remarks, the Minister encouraged girls and women to pursue careers in sports, highlighting the numerous benefits of athletic participation, including physical health, self-confidence, and economic empowerment. She also called on parents and communities to support young talents across all sporting disciplines.

The basketball event followed on March 22, 2025, at Groupe Scolaire Gahini in Kayonza District, featuring a match between Gahini Basketball Team and APR Basketball Team whereas the campaign closed with Indahangarwa Women’s Football Club vs Rayon Sports Women’s Club on March 29, 2025, at Kigali Pele Stadium,

The women’s tournament month was one of the key activities marking the golden jubilee of International Women’s Day in Rwanda, and it aimed to raise awareness, mobilize participation, and celebrate the power of women in sports. This initiative reaffirms Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment through inclusive, transformative, and community-driven action.
