Kigali- 17 January 2019- The 16 juvenile inmates who were granted clemency include 3 girls according to the presidential order issued yesterday. The decision to release them following their outstanding performance during last year's national exams.
All the inmates were serving their respective sentences in Nyagatare's juvenile prison after being convicted of various crimes.
Four out of 12 who sat for Primary exams were ranked in the first grade while the remaining eight were ranked in the second grade of best performers.
One of the four passed the O’level state exam, ranked in the first grade whilst three were ranked in the second
The clemency allows them to go out in the society and pursue their studies in ordinary schools but they have to exhibit a high level of discipline and avoid committing any other crime.
This is not the first time juvenile convicts are granted clemency. Last year, President Kagame granted clemency to 18 juvenile inmates after they scored the national exams with good marks, thanks to their outstanding performance.
