Women secure 61% of seats in Lower House

According to results of the recent parliamentarian elections, women occupy 61% of seats in the next Lower House of Parliament (Chamber of Deputies), literally meaning that out of 80 parliamentarians 49 women are women. Honorable Donatille Mukabalisa who retained the Lower House Speaker post after taking oath on 19th September, 2018, hailed President Kagame for his commendable inclusive leadership which gave space to women in potitics. ‘Let’s thank him for always advocating that men and women are equal, benefit from the same opportunities and both play a role in the country’s leadership especially in decision making organs.’-noted Honorable Mukabalisa The Speaker of the Parliament, Chamber of Deputies went on saying: “Today, the Parliament, Lower House, continues to lead the world in having a female dominated Parliament, who are skilled and determined to work hand in hand with their counterpart males in fulfilling their shared responsibility.’ This is not the first time to have a female dominated parliament in Rwanda as 64 per cent of the outgoing Chamber of Deputies were women. The Rwandan Constitution of 2003, amended in 2015, stipulates that women occupy at least thirty percent (30%) in decision making positions. Rwanda has, for over a decade, gained a recognition of empowering women both politically and economically particularly being the first country globally to have female-dominated parliament. This is seen by many as result of a strong commitment and the political will of the Government of Rwanda hence resulting in significant achievements in promoting gender equality and empowerment of women ranging from; an enabling policy, legal and institutional framework, enhanced socio-economic and political participation-setting a global pace for equality between men and women. According to a Global Competitiveness Report published in 2015, Rwanda is also ranked the best place to be a woman in Africa and the 6th
