Women hailed for their contribution in addressing Covid-19 pandemic
Kigali- 08 March 2021- In her message on the occasion of the International Women’s Day celebration; the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion hailed Rwandan women and girls for their outstanding contribution in the country’s socio-economic transformation and more importantly for being at the frontline in the fight to address Covid-19 pandemic. The Women’s Day was observed this Monday, 08th March under the theme: ‘Women, be at the fore front in a Covid-19 world’
‘As we celebrate the International Women’s Day; we applaud women and girls who are in different disciplines for their paramount contribution in ensuring family welfare and in our country’s socio-economic transformation. Special thanks to female health workers, security officers, journalists, volunteers and other females who are at the frontline in addressing Covid-19 pandemic.’- said Prof. Bayisenge
The Minister added: “The Covid-19 pandemic that has ravaged Rwanda and the entire world has shown us that solidarity and complementarity among all family members is essential ever than before. Let’s continue to respond to the effects of this pandemic and building a safe and resilient families.”
Some of the female front liners in addressing Covid-19 say that they are proud to play a role in containing this pandemic.
Dr. Aimee Victoire MANIRAGUHA, a former Doctor and Site Manager at Kanyinya Treatment Center says: ‘Being at the frontline in the fight against Covid-19 has been an experience to witness heroes’ hard days. It requires sacrifice, determination and full commitment. On this International Women’s Day; I applaud fellow female health workers who continue to be at the forefront in building our country not only in the health sector but also in other disciplines.
The International Women’s Day comes when Rwanda has recorded tremendous achievements in empowering women and girls in different domains. Today, the number of women in decision making organs has increased. For instance, in governance, 61.3% of parliamentarians (Lower House) are women whilst 52% of cabinet members are women. In districts’ councils, women make 45.2%.
UN Women Representative in Rwanda Ms. Fatou Lo noted “UN Women salutes the actions taken to advance gender equality and women and girls’ empowerment across the country. In line with the Generation Equality campaign, the organization will continue to work with the Government, Civil Society, Private Sector and all valuable partners to amplify women and girls’ voices, building for an equal future.”
The International Women’s Day was established by the United Nations in 1972 in efforts to reflect on women’s role in the development of her country, celebrating the achievements made and set up measures to Fast-track the national development. Rwanda began celebrating the International Women’s Day in 1975.
