Bugesera: Commemoration of women and children killed during the Genocide against the Tutsi
Kigali, 13 May 2018-The commemorations of the Genocide against Tutsi in Bugesera district was held on Sunday, 13 May 2018 at Karambi Primary school, located in Nyamata Sector, Kiyumba Cell on Karambi hill. This place is known for being a grave to thousands of Tutsi who were slaughtered in a monstrous way during 1994, thrown to Rufunzo swamp located in the region
Government officials including The Speaker of the Parliament chamber of Deputies, Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Senate Vice President, security organs, Unity Club and others lay a wreath to Rufunzo swamp where thousands Tutsi were thrown including women who were raped before being killed.
Karambi Primary school located in the area has a tragic history, having been reopened five years after the Genocide perpetrated against Tutsi because all children were wiped out with their parents. Over 2000 women and children from 5000 homes are reported to have been killed whilst only 15 people survived. Those who were killed defended themselves by stoning killers but the later sought support from trained killers ‘Interahamwe’ who were greatly armed.
The Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Honorable Nyirasafari told mourners in Bugesera district that women and children slaughtered from Karambi, those thrown in Rufunzo swamp and others killed from neighboring areas in the district were killed in a monstrous manner especially mothers who were killed after being raped. Minister Nyirasafari said that what happened should never happen again.
`We are remembering victims of the genocide against Tutsi especially women and children, denouncing this heinous act, it is an opportunity to learn from our history while we also teach our beloved children to prevent anything taking us back to the same history.’-Minister Nyirasafari
Speaking during the event, Donatille Mukabalisa, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, who was the guest of honor said that it it is a pity that women were also involved in killing innocent children that used to play with their own children adding that the country lost a lot of people during the Genocide, including a big number of women and children who would now be husbands and wives and who would be contributing to the country’s development.

Honorable Mukabalisa noted that the Genocide against Tutsi was incited by the then bad regime with the intention of wiping out all Tutsi adding that the country is now lucky to have a visionary leadership which guarantee security and prevent any kind of discrimination amongst its citizens.
Executive Secretary of the Commission Against Genocide Ideology Senator Jean Damascene Bizimana who spoke at the event, said that figures released in 2004 show that out of a total of 1,074,057 Genocide victims, over 53 per cent were aged between 0-24 years.
Also, findings from the survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda in 2007 counted 309,368 survivors, among whom 180,593 (or 58 per cent) are women.
