African Gender development index research launched in Rwanda

7th July 2010, Wednesday, at Top Tower Hotel, African Gender development index research was launched by the Executive Secretary at National Women’s Council, Mrs Christine TUYISENGE.

In her opening remarks, she explained the importance of this research as a tool which measures disparities between men and women in all areas, especially those considered as priorities because of their strategic nature.

She also pointed out the lack of disaggregated data as the most challenge that our country is trying to address.

Ms. Thokozile Ruzvidzo, acting Director of African Centre for gender and social development, UNECA in her presentation dwelled on the purpose and overview of the African Gender Development Index( AGDI) as a mechanism developed by United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) for measuring the status of women as compared to men’s in the social, economic and political spheres.

The AGDI will be working under Gender Monitoring Office (GMO) with an advisory panel of different Ministries, institutions, NGOs, UN Family, etc.
